the Happiness Village | 1 |
People who lived in the Happiness Village had a character that they felt
as if they earned big profit when they'd done something good for others. They usually got along with working well for their family, amusing their children, studying to develop themselves. However little they could afford to do anything else, volunteer was quite pleasure for them. |
|||||
1. | |||||
Which case do you feel as if you got profit? In case you picked up money? In case you've eaten more foods than others? In case someone else did a job that you had to do? Or in case no one was aware of your mistakes or failures? |
|||||
the Happiness Village | 2 |
They gave a warm blanket to someone who was almost frozen with cold. They let someone who starved eat a lot. They invited someone who was drenched in rain into their house and let him sit near a fireplace. If they saw someone who was leading a lonely life, they became a companion for him. If they saw someone who was suffered by sickness, they devoted themselves to care for him. If they saw someone who was in trouble, they helped him. |
All of them competed with others in volunteer, but such a competition had never developed to a fight. Because if they fought, they would hurt each other and found that it was bad for others, and also they’d feel as if they incurred a loss. Therefore volunteer was the happiest activity they couldn't describe. |

So the village chief invited him to dinner. Doma repeated a refill until he was satisfied. Doma was full and became drowsy, then the chief carried him to his bedroom and bedded calmly.
The chief and his wife were so happy.
2. | ||||||
It was a fine day that is fragrant with the smell of spring flowers.
Doma, the man who hates a hard work and can’t stand anything that is unlikely
to turn out as his wish, came to the Happiness Village. Doma was feeling very hungry because of a long trip, so he asked villagers for something to eat. |
||||||
the Happiness Village | 4 |
Doma was staying at the chief’s house and healing fatigue comfortably. He was a lazy man by nature so he kept staying as a sponger even after reenergizing. | He was so fond of this village because people did for him anything he asked. He felt as though he became the king of this village, for people were so diligent and they felt over each other for opportunity to take care of him.
the Happiness Village | 5 |
Although he was the king, there’s nothing to do except an extravagant life for him.
Then, Doma suggested he’d like to be a real king of this village. People
were willing to realize his wish so that they built a great palace in west
village. Doma became the king of the Happiness Village like this. |
Governing the village, for example, organizing people’s thought as a leader of this village, arranging roads, a school, a hospital and other institutions, directing something to do when a disaster, ...these were the chief’s job as before.
the Happiness Village | 6 |
3 The chief had a pretty gracious daughter Aestheri. Doma fell in love with her at first sight, and he want to make her his wife. |
One day he visited the chief’s house and asked the chief to get married to Aestheri as the queen.
But
Aestheri had a boyfriend Spal who is a dauntless young guy. Even though Doma knew it, he was completely unable to suppress his desire to marry her. |
||||||
But the chief thought that Aestheri
would marry Spal, so he told Doma that he couldn’t say anything then. Doma felt little bit angry because his offer had never been rejected since he’d come there. But he decided to go back once. |
||||||
the Happiness Village | 7 |
After Doma left, the chief called
Aestheri and told her what Doma asked. And he urged her to make a decision of
her marriage by herself. Although Doma was so selfish and overbearing, Aestheri didn’t dislike him. She’d rather feel as if he was a very attractive guy. |
But she didn’t answer of it shortly because she knew Spal loved her too.
the Happiness Village | 8 |
If she married Doma who was lazy, Aestheri must be able to dedicate for him at any time. There was nothing to be happy for people of the Happiness Village except it. |
||||
Spal desired that the woman he loved
would become happy more than anything else. |
||||
He knew himself loved Aestheri from
the bottom of his heart, and he thought that she should choose the best way to
become happy. So he decided to withdraw. Aestheri became Doma’s wife at last. |
||||
the Happiness Village | 9 |
4. Doma had nothing to do because Aestheri and villagers were willing to do whatever he needed. Villagers could serve him as much as they like. So everybody was happy. The Happiness Village was just utopia. |
Doma and Aestheri had a baby boy soon. Aestheri named him Ateli. Ateli was a thoughtful bright boy like his mother. |
|||
the Happiness Village | 10 |
Doma took it for granted that the noble family live in luxury and it shouldn’t work as hard as villagers. Ateli knew it so he was a naughty mischievous boy whenever he was with Doma. Doma was satisfied with his son’s behavior and Ateli felt happy to see his father.
Ateli grew rapidly. But Doma became so obese that he couldn’t walk alone due to overeating and lack of exercise. He had heart trouble and was ill in bed. When Ateli had grown up and summer had come, Doma easily died in bed.
the Happiness Village | 11 |
In spite of the peak season of harvesting, there was no villager who could work as usual because of grief of the king’s death. Aestheri also had nothing to live for herself, so she idled her time away every day. | Ateli saw such scenes and he decided himself to work in villagers’ place, to encourage his mother and to dedicate for all. People regained gradually and Ateli felt little bit happy.
the Happiness Village | 12 |
Domi had the same character as Doma who couldn’t stand that everything wasn’t controlled. Domi had rumor that his brother became the king of the Happiness Village and lived in luxury. So he wanted to live in the village too.
5 That year passed and spring had come. When villagers regained, Domi came the Happiness Village to ask Doma. Aestheri was shocked to see Domi because Domi was double of Doma. Yes. Domi was his twin brother. |
||||
the Happiness Village | 13 |
Knowing his brother’s death, Domi told villagers that he should be the new king. Villagers were all so glad as if the king had come back because he was absolutely similar to the former king. | Aestheri lost no time in looking after Domi. Ateli thought Domi as his father revived, so he behaved selfish like before in order to make Domi delightful.
the Happiness Village | 14 |
But Domi was a very suspicious man. He suspected that the former family
behaved so because they had an attempt to usurp the throne. And finally
he threw Aestheri and Ateli out from the palace. |
||||
Ateli and his mother felt little bit sad. But they could live calmly
helping villagers who looked after Domi. So they were happy. |
||||
the Happiness Village | 15 |
The man who was the strongest in guards was Spal. Yes. It’s Spal who used to be a boyfriend of Aestheri the former queen. Because Spal the tenderhearted powerful man was also very popular, he was ordered to be a captain of the guard.
6 Domi told villagers that the king should have guards around him. So some villagers alternately stood in front of the palace in spare moments from their work. And Domi said that guards should train and strengthen themselves at any time in order to provide for wars. So guards were building up their bodies by wrestling with each other or practicing fencing using wooden sticks. |
||||
the Happiness Village | 16 |
Knowing about this tournament, Domi called Spal and ordered him to win for the honor of the captain of the guard. But no matter what the king ordered, there was no villager to think that Spal would lose. And the day of the tournament had come. Actually, there was no man who could win to Spal. Spal won through the semifinals hands down. |
||||
By the way, villagers had a good harvest of grain that year when Domi
had come. All villagers except Domi harvested and it was decided to hold
a festival to celebrate the good harvest. The best pleasure for villagers was the wrestling tournament that was held in the festival. Powerful men in the village practiced very hard in order to be the champ. |
||||
the Happiness Village | 17 |
But Spal faced an unexpected opponent at the final. The opponent who won through the hard semifinals was none other than Ateli. | Young Ateli who didn’t know wrestling very well at first nearly lost every fight. But he got the knack through winnings by a narrow margin that was sometimes helped by opponents’ failures, and he became stronger every time he fought.

Well, it was the final at last. Domi dislike Ateli, so he told Spal to win at any cost. And he threatened that he would confiscate whole property of Spal’s if Spal lost. On the other hand, Ateli thought that it would be OK that everyone could enjoy the tournament whichever he won or lost because it was just a festival. And even if he got the |

to lose for Spal from the beginning. Hearing the voice of a caller, Spal at the foot of the ring stared at eyes of Ateli who sat on opposite side.
the Happiness Village | 19 |
And when they got on the ring, there was nothing to hear because of great
applause. “Ready go!!” Bump! Spal gave Ateli a shove as forcefully as he could by his stout arm. Ateli was shoved to the edge of the ring and then he would go out. |
||||
But unexpectedly, Spal caught Ateli’s body and brought it back to the
center of the ring keeping their balance. Suddenly, Spal whispered into Ateli’s ear, “Do you think I ‘m glad to win a fixed game?” And he continued that winning by foul play would make him unhappier than losing his house and field. |
||||
the Happiness Village | 20 |
Villagers were all exciting and completely satisfied that match. “Well, you lost but you’re satisfied too, aren’t you?” said Spal and he smiled. “I will win next.” said Ateli and he smiled too. |
||||
Hearing Spal’s words, Ateli felt so sorry for him. And he decided to
fight with all his might for Spal. After that, the final, Spal the strongest vs. Ateli the growing young man, became an exciting close match. Although both of them fought exerting their full strength, the winner couldn’t be decided easily. They had a break three times in their fight, and then Spal pushed Ateli out of the ring at last. |

the Happiness Village | 21 |
Oppo had an audience with the king Domi and got the approval to live there
as an aristocrat. Villagers gave him a warm welcome and built a mansion
for him in the east of the village. Villagers were greatly pleased to feel
as if there were two kings who lived in the east and the west of the village.
|
|||||

That year passed and spring had come again, it became the peak season
for planting. One day, Oppo came to the village. Oppo was a friend of Doma
the former king and he got the rumor of this village too. And also Oppo
couldn’t stand that everything wasn’t controlled. |
|||||
the Happiness Village | 22 |
However, Oppo’s real intention was different from he looked like. Everything should be No.1 for him or he couldn’t stand everything. Yes. He wanted to take Domi’s place, the king of this village. But it was impossible to ask Domi to change the throne without preparation. | So, first of all, Oppo made Ateli and his mother, who lived quietly on the outskirts of the village, live in his mansion. And he told villagers around him that it was absurd that Domi was the king instead of Ateli who was the prince of the former king.
the Happiness Village | 23 |
Eastern villagers would like to serve Oppo, so they asked Ateli to be the king. But clever Ateli who knew Oppo desired the throne refused villagers’ request and said that it would be better if Oppo became the king in place of him. Villagers agreed with him.
Oppo was so glad to hear Ateli’s saying. And then, Oppo declared that he was the real king because he was formally given the throne from the legitimate prince.
the Happiness Village | 24 |
Spal went to Oppo’s mansion alone. He noticed villagers took elaborate activities, so he got under cover and saw how things go. Oppo made an army of which captain was Ateli against Domi’s guard. The security precaution of the mansion was so strict that Spal had to give up and go back.

Domi was terribly enraged at Oppo’s declaration of enthronement. He called Spal the captain of the guard and told him to capture Oppo.
